Kids Kan (Feb. 20- extended, March 31) is an annual food donation drive collected by over 100 individual schools across Shelby County, and beginning in 2016, DeSoto County, Miss.
The drive accounts for thousands of meals for food-insecure households across the region with each campaign. Kids Kan is intentionally designed to engage children in the fight versus hunger with first, education, and second, participation. The child hunger rate across the 31-county region that Mid-South Food Bank services is 21 percent.
Each school and each classroom is free to creatively encourage its students to donate non-perishable goods like peanut butter, canned tuna and canned vegetables. Many schools compete from grade to grade, or from one classroom to another with prizes and other incentives.
Mid-South Food Bank presents a $25 Kroger gift card and Wendy's Jr. Frosty coupons to each school's classroom that collected the most donations, and a trophy at Kids Kan conclusion is awarded to both the elementary school and middle school that collects the most donatations out of every participating school.
2017 Kids Kan sponsors are Kroger, KIX 106, Wendy's, FedEx and Big League Movers.
