AutoZone Employees To Pack 1,000 Mid-South Food Bank Kids BackPacks

Memphis, TN (June 2, 2014) – As part of AutoZone Inc.’s 35th anniversary, approximately 100 employees at the Memphis-based global headquarters will be volunteering on June 4 to pack healthy meals for Kids BackPacks, a Mid-South Food Bank Child Hunger initiative. AutoZone has been a strong supporter of Kids BackPacks since 2008 and currently is the corporate sponsor of Kids BackPacks for about 300 students at Knight Road Elementary School in Memphis.

“The fact that AutoZone would include this volunteer effort as a part of its anniversary is outstanding and is an indicator of how much the company values helping the local community and specifically making a difference in helping the Food Bank tackle hunger,” said Shelley Alley, Mid-South Food Bank chief development officer.

From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., AutoZone employees in an assembly-line fashion will be packing more than 1,000 boxes with 11 nutritious food items, including milk, fruit, protein and vegetables. The boxes will later be distributed that day by AutoZone to Mid-South Food Bank.

The food will then be designated for Kids BackPacks, which provide hungry Mid-South children with six nutritious, easy-to-serve meals every weekend. Overall, the program distributes meals to almost 2,000 children during the school calendar year and nearly 900 during the summer when school is closed.

AutoZone’s headquarters is at 123 S. Front St. Mid-South Food Bank is located at 239 S. Dudley St.
