Commitment to Feeding America®
Memphis, TN (July 5,
2013) – The Unilever US Foundation, in the name of its plant in Covington, TN, is
providing a $20,000 grant to Mid-South food Bank to support the Food for Kids
BackPack Program in Tipton County. The
local donation is part of a national commitment of $200,000 from the Unilever
US Foundation to address child hunger through grants to 10 Feeding America
member food banks and is part of the nationwide partnership between Unilever
and Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.
The Covington plant, where ice cream products are
made, has worked with Mid-South Food Bank for four years as sponsor of the
BackPack Program through Children & Family Services. In 2011, the program was expanded to include
qualified students at Covington Integrated Arts Academy.
In addition to this donation, employees of
the plant collect food and funds in December as part of the Action News 5
Holiday Food Drive that benefits Mid-South Food Bank.
According to the latest Feeding America Map the Meal
Gap study, 21.6 percent of children in Tipton County are food insecure, which
means they are do not have access at all times to enough food to maintain good
health. That is more than 3,500 children
in Covington and the surrounding area.
According to Estella Mayhue-Greer, president &
CEO of Mid-South Food Bank, the grant funds will be used to continue the Food
for Kids BackPack Program in Covington, which currently serves 130 children.
"We are grateful to serve in the same community as Unilever and are
thankful for their continued support," said Mayhue-Greer.
