Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Boy Scouts to Participate in National Cereal Drive

Organizations pledge to raise 350,000 servings for Mid-South Food Bank

Memphis, Tenn. (May 21, 2012) –Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital joins with 11 children’s hospitals across the country for the annual Professional Nursing Council’s Cereal Drive, to collect cereal and other breakfast foods for local food banks. In collaboration with the Mid-South Food Bank and the Boy Scouts of America, Le Bonheur's drive will be held May 31-June 7.   Le Bonheur and the Boy Scouts will host a drop-off event for the public on Friday, June 7, from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Individuals are invited to drive by the hospital drive at 50 N. Dunlap and drop off donations of cereal, cereal bars and other healthy, non-perishable breakfast items. Every standard box of cereal counts as 10 servings. Online contributions can be made at  Select "Cereal Drive" in the drop-down designation box.   Le Bonheur is pledging to collect 350,000 servings – approximately 20,500 boxes of cereal – and hospital staff, volunteers and community members are invited to help them reach their goal. Last year, Le Bonheur's first year for the event, the goal was set at 60,000 servings and the Le Bonheur team and Boy Scouts collected more than 300,000 servings for Mid-South Food Bank.   More than 23 percent of Mid-South children live in food insecure households, according to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap study.  "Breakfast is so important to growing children so this cereal drive will help provide a nutritious breakfast for thousands of kids to start their day," said Estella Mayhue-Greer, Mid-South Food Bank president & CEO.    ###
