Kids Kan 2013 - The School Food & Funds Drive

Memphis, Tenn. (January 30, 2013) —Kids Kan, Mid-South Food Bank's school-based food drive,  invites all Mid-South elementary and middle schools to join in the fight against hunger by collecting non-perishable food and taking it to school from February 11 – 15 for Shelby County Schools and February 18 – 22 for Memphis City, Memphis Catholic Diocese and other area schools.  Adults can participate by helping children collect food, or donating money, which the Food Bank uses to purchase food.

In 2012, more than 249,600 pounds of food and $30,000 was collected during Kids Kan – the equivalent of more than 298,000 meals.  The food is distributed to Mid-South Food Bank's network of more than 300 charitable feeding programs in west Tennessee, north Mississippi and east Arkansas.  Funds are used to purchase high nutrition value foods for distribution.  Nearly 407,000 people struggle with food insecurity and hunger in the Mid-South; one-third of them are children.

For the 25th year, Kroger is the lead sponsor of Kids Kan.  Kroger is rewarding the homeroom that collects the largest amount of food at each school with gift cards for parties or school supplies. Other sponsors are FedEx, Fox13, Comtrak Logistics, KIX106 and Wendy’s.  For more information on Kids Kan, contact David Stephens, director of community relations, at 901-527-0841 or
